Selling a junk car with no keys

Can I sell a junk car if I lost the keys?
Yes. Keys don't prove who owns a car in Illinois; the title or another ownership document does. S & H Cash for Junk Cars Corp. buys keyless junk cars across Markham and the nearby south suburbs, tows them free and pays at pickup in cash, Zelle or Cash App. Tell us up front that the keys are gone.
Keys go missing for ordinary reasons. They were on a ring that got lost, a relative who drove the car last has them, or the fob died years ago and nobody replaced it. For a car that’s being sold for scrap or parts, none of that should stop the sale.
What actually proves ownership
In Illinois a scrap processor buying from a private seller has to record two forms of ID, one of them a driver’s license or state ID card, and has to get a document of ownership: a certificate of title, a salvage certificate, a junking certificate or something similar (625 ILCS 5/5-401.3). Keys aren’t part of that. So the question that decides your sale is “where’s the title?”, not “where are the keys?”

Should you replace the key first?
Usually not, if the car is going for scrap. Cutting a new key or programming a fob means a dealer or locksmith visit, and the bill comes out of your pocket while the offer barely changes. It’s worth it only if you plan to drive the car or sell it as a running vehicle, which is a different sale from the one we make.
What to tell us before pickup
A keyless car is loaded differently from one the driver can start and steer, so a few details help us plan:
| Tell us | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Whether it’s locked | The driver may need to get inside to release the parking brake or shifter. |
| Whether it’s in Park | An automatic left in Park won’t roll freely. |
| Where it sits | A garage, a tight side yard or a spot behind other cars takes more planning. |
| Whether the tires hold air | Flat tires don’t stop a pickup, but we like to know. |
| Push-button start or a regular key | Some newer cars lock the steering without the fob. |
None of these stop a sale. They just keep the pickup short.
Keys you do have
If you have a key that turns the ignition but doesn’t open the doors, or a fob with a dead battery, leave it with the car anyway. It can make loading easier. Take off house keys and anything else on the same ring first.
Other things that often go missing with the keys
When the keys disappear, the garage remote, the toll transponder and the registration card often went with them. Check the visor and glovebox for the transponder, and remember the plates are yours to keep in Illinois. What happens after you sell covers the plates and the Seller’s Report of Sale.
No keys and it won’t run either
That’s a common pairing, and it doesn’t change the sale. Our page on cars that don’t run explains how non-running cars are priced. We pick up from driveways and lots in Markham, Oak Forest and the other towns on our service area list, and the guides page covers the paperwork side.
Next step
Send the year, make and model through the quote form and pick the title option that fits, or call (773) 317-1211 and say the keys are gone. We’ll give you a number on the phone and set the pickup.
Quick answers
- Will you pay less because there are no keys?
- The keys themselves rarely move a junk car offer much. What the car weighs, what's still on it and which parts can be reused matter far more. Say on the call that the keys are missing so the number already accounts for it.
- Do I need the keys to prove the car is mine?
- No. A scrap buyer in Illinois has to see an ownership document, such as the title, plus two forms of ID, one of them a driver's license or state ID card. Keys aren't on that list.
- I found a spare fob after the car was picked up. What do I do with it?
- Nothing is needed for the sale. Throw it out or keep it; it only works with that car.
