Selling a scrap car in Markham and the south suburbs

How much is a scrap car worth?

A scrap car is worth what its metal and usable parts bring that week, so S & H Cash for Junk Cars Corp. prices each one on the call from its year, make, model, size and what's still on it. Towing from Markham and nearby towns is free, and you're paid at pickup in cash, Zelle or Cash App.

A crashed cream sedan sitting on top of a heap of scrap metal

“Scrap” is the word people use when a car has no future on the road. Maybe it failed emissions and the repair costs more than the car. Maybe it’s been under a tarp behind the garage for years. Either way, the value is in what it’s made of and what can be pulled off it.

What decides a scrap price

A scrap offer isn’t a used-car appraisal. Mileage and paint barely matter. These do:

  • Size and weight. A full-size pickup or SUV carries more steel than a compact sedan.
  • Completeness. An engine, transmission, wheels and a catalytic converter that are still on the car add value. A shell with the drivetrain pulled is worth less, and that’s fine, it still sells.
  • Parts demand. Some models have parts that sell well. That can lift an offer above plain metal value.
  • The market that week. Steel prices go up and down. We quote on the day, which is why we don’t publish a price list. More on this on how offers are set.

Scrap versus selling it as a junk car

The line is blurry, and you don’t have to pick one. A car that runs badly but still has a good engine might be bought for parts value. A car that was in a fire is bought for metal. You describe it, we price it. Our wrecked car page covers accident damage, and cars that don’t run covers dead engines and transmissions.

What Illinois asks of a scrap sale

Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/5-401.3) has scrap processors record the seller’s identity from two sources, one of them a driver’s license or state ID, and keep proof of ownership such as a certificate of title. So expect to show ID, and expect questions about the paperwork. That isn’t us being difficult, it’s how a legitimate scrap sale works in this state. The statute is here.

After the sale, the car is towed and processed. Fluids, the battery and tires are handled under their own rules before the metal is shredded. Our guide on what car recycling does for the environment explains each step with sources.

Small things that raise a scrap offer

  • Leave the catalytic converter on the car. Illinois law makes it a violation to sell a converter that isn’t attached to a vehicle unless the seller holds a state license as a parts recycler or scrap processor (815 ILCS 325/4.1).
  • Leave the other parts on too. Whatever is missing comes off the offer.
  • Be exact about what’s missing. A surprise at pickup means a new number.
  • Take your plates, personal papers and any toll transponder out first.

Questions about this

Do you buy cars with parts missing?
Yes. Tell us what's gone (engine, transmission, wheels, catalytic converter) so the offer reflects the car that's actually there and doesn't change when the truck arrives.
Why did my scrap offer change from last month?
Scrap metal prices move. A car's value as scrap follows the market for steel and the parts buyers want, so an offer is tied to the day it's made.
Do I need a title to scrap a car in Illinois?
Illinois expects proof of ownership for a scrap sale. Tell us what papers you have (bill of sale, registration, insurance card) and we'll confirm on the call whether they work for your car. Our no-title guide explains the rule.
